012_12When I was just beginning to move from loner to leader I read these words:

Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.” 1

They have helped me to remember not to choose as selfishly as I am inclined to be.

I attached the picture on purpose. Bad pictures remind us to laugh at ourselves and not take ourselves too seriously.

I’m thinking a lot about my role as a leader.

We have great volunteers at TreeHouse, but their roles and career paths will take them in different directions in time. I know we need to cultivate new relationships and diversify our staff to provide the best coverage for our community.

With that in mind, these words from Robert Morris keep echoing through my mind:

“The fact is, your ability to grow in size and impact will live or die upon your success in these areas:

1. Successfully identifying and attracting outstanding leaders to join you in the work

2. Properly cultivating and training those leaders — setting them into their proper place

3. Empowering those leaders — striking the ideal balance between providing accountability and training while avoiding the common sin of micromanaging.”

I ask myself:

Where are our new volunteers coming from?
When I meet them, will I guide them to be successful?
Will I keep my influence in balance?

I don’t know, so I continue to pray mysilentscream, “Please God help me…”
