Will They Stop & Listen?

Posted on Thursday, November 26, 2009 in Uncategorized

In the evening when were not talking or laughing I’m “not watching TV.” Yes, the TV is on, but I am usually reading while the TV plays in the background. Somehow I can pay attention to both my reading and the TV. I’m multitasking.

Multitasking

Maybe I’m maximizing my time.

Maybe I’m increasing my productivity.

Maybe I’m lying to myself.

What I do know is that I’m dropping in on Facebook, checking an email inbox, messaging a friend or reading my RSS subs.

Tonight something changed. Right in the middle of reading a great article written by Shane Claiborne I stopped.

I stopped to watch; that usually only happens when I watch sports. Tonight I’m watching an episode of Criminal Minds. Aaron Hotchner, a main character, found his ex-wife murdered.

Going forward I don’t know what the writers will do with Hotchner’s character, but I was intrigued.

I seldom just WATCH television, tonight their writing caused me to drop everything and watch and react.  I felt tension. I felt angry. I felt sad. I felt vengeful.  The episode, the story was compelling.

As disciples of Jesus Christ we follow someone with one, if not the most compelling story in history.

I hope that as I tell Jesus’ story that I can stop side-conversations, random texting and day-dreaming because they are so intrigued that they drop everything and watch, listen and react.

“We were sent to speak for Christ, and God is begging you to listen to our message. We speak for Christ and sincerely ask you to make peace with God. Christ never sinned! But God treated him as a sinner, so that Christ could make us acceptable to God.”

“God is begging you to listen”, God is begging me to listen. God is begging because God loves us.

This Thanksgiving I’m thankful that the God of creation begs.
