What is INTEGRITY?
Integrity, according to dictionary.com means, “adherence to moral and ethical principles; soundness of moral character; honesty.”
I following through consistently on true beliefs and healthy values.
I cannot begin to think through what a mangled mess “integrity” can be.
Who decides what’s true/truth?
What value are beliefs? How about facts?
And, for that matter, whose beliefs?
Who determines what and whose values are healthy?
And, what value are values?
Do some values have precedence over other values?
For instance, if I think “It’s ‘true’ for me, is that sufficient for it to be truth?
What happens if I value my beliefs, and you value your beliefs, but they conflict?
What if we both hope for a win-win, but eventually one of us wins more?
What if you think a healthy society should value order and safety?
What if I think a healthy society should value freedom and creativity?
And, is my safety more important than your safety?
To not admit the complexity of these matters is either ignorant or hypocritical.
The world is filled with hypocrites. We were not designed to be a hypocrite.
The world is filled with cowards. We were not empowered to be cowards.
The world is filled with fools. We were not created with a brain to squander it and become fools.
The world is filled with freedom-fighters, but we were not given freedom to disrespect the term by calling foolishness “freedom”.
Make sure you think before you speak.
Make sure you access your values before you vote.
Make sure you pray before you arrive at the polls.
Integrity involves knowing and doing what is right, keeping promises, admitting errors, and being honest.
You, beloved, are “the salt of the earth … and you, beloved, are the light of the world.” 1
Let’s act like it!
