On The Couch With Sherlock Holmes

BasilRathbone-NigelBruce

Growing up in Chicago on Sunday afternoons I was introduced to the Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce series of Sherlock Holmes films.

– I loved their compassion.
– I loved their pursuit of justice.
– I loved their witty banter.
– I loved their moral high-ground.
– I loved their community involvement.
– I loved they solved challenging mysteries.
– I loved their intellect and deductive analysis.
– I loved Holmes patience with Watson his intelligent but intellectually inferior partner.
– I loved the humanity Watson brought the to the too-often cerebral Holmes.
– I loved that Holmes knew and admitted he needed his friend Watson to ground him.

This weekend I finished the fifth of five of wonderful marriage celebrations in the last couple of months.

Ashley and Jesse Stinson got married
Nate and Manna Towler got married
Jonnie and Courtney Towler got married
Luke and Jessica Skelly got married, and,
Amy and I celebrated our 25th anniversary with a vow renewal ceremony.

Faithfulness

Yesterday, I reviewed Stu Weber’s book Tender Warrior in his book he challenges us as men to be finishers.  And to you my male readers — newly-married, or not — let’s honor the women in our lives by being “finishers.”

Perilous Pride

One of my all-time favorite television shoes is Columbo.  I love how the seemingly dimwitted detective relentlessly unravels the mystery.

Consistently Columbo faces intelligent murderers who dismiss Columbo as a nitwit who they can easily outwit.

In one of my favorite Columbo episodes is Bye Bye Sky High IQ Murder Case.

Wikipedia explains that, after Bertie Hastings discovers that his friend, Oliver Brandt, a senior partner in an accounting firm, has been embezzling money to support the lifestyle of his wife, Brandt kills Hastings at the Sigma Society, a club for geniuses. 1

Google’s new Chrome OS will use web apps exclusively. Here is a continuation of my favorite FREE web apps.

Grammar Checker

I could have learned grammar when I was younger, but I was lazy. I may not have learned grammar, but I did find Whitesmoke’s Free Online Grammar Checker to identify and correct my grammatical blunders.

Jotti’s Malware Scan

I have used Jotti’s online scan for years. There are times when I have wanted to test a file I downloaded from the internet. Jotti scans have helped me to avoid opening tainted Windows files.

Do You Like To Name Drop?

Posted on Wednesday, November 11, 2009 in Relational, Spiritual

Have you ever met a celebrity?  A favorite band?  A compelling author?  A poet whose words changed your heart?  A doctor who changed your health?  A therapist who changed your mind?  A minister who changed the direction of your soul?  A friend who help heal your wound?  A lover who helps heal your aloneness?

Do you like to name drop?

You might be impressed if I said I play basketball with Lebron, play guitar with Rodrigo, or sing with Christina.  You might want to sit down and have coffee with Jimmy Carter and me.
