Secrets & “As If”

Posted on Friday, March 8, 2013 in Emotional, How To, Relational, Social, Spiritual, TreeHouse, Values

shadow_of_a_friendWe’re examining the power of secrets this week. If you missed the first few, here they are: Hidden Away, Our Hiding and Secrets & Hiding.

Let’s admit two things:
1. I hide my secrets
2. You hide your secrets

While we might protect our secrets for good reasons, sometimes we don’t. Not only that, but sometimes our secrets are the very thing that holds us back from making hope-filled, positive decisions in life.

We stay “stuck.” Stuck in place. Stuck and not making positive changes in our lives.

Secrets & Hiding

file000596286033We’re examining the power of secrets this week. If you missed the first two, here they are: Hidden Away and Our Hiding

I hide.
You hide.
They hide.

Why Do We All Hide?

“There is one thing”, explains Stephen Covey, “that is common to every individual, relationship, team, family, organization, nation, economy and civilization throughout the world — one thing which, if removed, will destroy the most powerful government, the most successful business, the most thriving economy, the most influential leadership, the greatest friendship, the strongest character, the deepest love.”

Any guesses?

Secrets: Our Hiding

Posted on Wednesday, March 6, 2013 in Emotional, Relational, Social, Values

hidenseekSecrets, we all have them.
Secrets, we all guard them.
Secrets, we all fear their exposure.

Yesterday I mentioned Josh Groban’s song Hidden Away.

If you haven’t had a chance to hear it, give it a listen. He opens the song with:

“Over mountains and sky blue seas
On great circles will you watch for me?
The sweetest feeling I’ve got inside
I just can’t wait to get lost in your eyes
And all these words that you meant to say
Held in silence day after day
Words of kindness that our poor hearts crave
Please don’t keep them hidden away”

This sweet song by Josh Groban describes one person’s challenge to help another feel safe enough to share those secrets.

Secrets

communicationcomputer-23713_640Charles Dickens wrote, “A wonderful fact to reflect upon, that every human creature is constituted to be that profound secret and mystery to every other.”

We are fascinated by secrets, rumors and gossip.

I used to be offended by a statement like that until it became obvious.

“Obvious?!?”, someone might argue.

Maybe secrets, rumors and gossip are not the fascination of everyone, but how else can you explain:
– The popularity of fantasy sports & their paid “Insider” features
– The popularity of TMZ & the volumes of celebrity gossip
– The illegality of insider trading
– The mumblings and rumblings as most school lunch tables

Secrets, Sins & Scandals

Posted on Tuesday, July 19, 2011 in Emotional, How To, Spiritual, Values

Have you ever thought that after doing something wrong — if you just keep it a secret — that no one would ever find out?

I’ve done it; many times.

My parents were in town a couple of weeks ago with my nephew and niece. While we were talking we started sharing scar stories. I was last to share. I have many scars. I was trying to decide which scar had the most memorable or entertaining story.

Amy, my wife, spoke up, “Scott tell about…” and a secret was out.
