Risk-Taking In The Real World
The Dark Knight Rises opened last night. He’s a brave risk-taker.
But, I’m not a multimillionaire, so I’ll never be like Bruce Wayne.
The Amazing Spiderman opened a few weeks ago. He’s a brave risk-taker.
But, I’m not going to be bit by a radioactive spider, so I’ll never be like Peter Parker.
What kind of hero — what kind of bold, heroic, risk-taker — might you and I become?
Real World Heroes = Risk-Takers
Yesterday I had an hour-long conversation with a university professor who teaches potential risk-takers; she teaches entrepreneurship. It was a fascinating discussion about the challenges of taking great ideas and creating great opportunities.
I Take Risks
I take risks.
I do, I take risks.
When you read that you might have thought:
– “What kind of risks?”
– “I take risks too.”
– “Risks? I like playing it safe.”
– “I love risk-takers.”
– “He’s in his forties, he shouldn’t be taking risks.”
– “I used to be a risk-taker, but I’ve gotten burned. Now I play it safer.”
And, if you know me personally you know that I don’t:
– Free-climbing a mountains
– Free-dive for octopus
– Sky dive
I don’t, but I could.
What Gamble Are You Glad That You Took?
Yesterday was the 26th anniversary of the day I asked Amy out. Yesterday was also the day the server failed to save our post explaining the gamble that was the day that Amy said “Yes!”.
Guest Post by Amy Volltrauer
Scott and I had known each other for a couple of months and had talked about going out. I knew that Scott might ask me out soon, but I didn’t know when. I thought Scott might ask me out as part of a conversation.

A Gamble I Wish I Didn’t Take
Today is the 26th anniversary of the day I asked Amy out.
Today Amy and I wrote a sweet piece about the gamble she took when she said “Yes.”
Unfortunately, the gamble that I wish that I didn’t take was to hit the “Save” button without copying and pasting into another document. The server was down and we lost everything.
Amy: I’m sorry.
Scott: Wanna rewrite it.
Amy: No.
Well there you have it.
We laughed, and then we laughed again when I typed “We laughed”.
We will (re-)tell the rest of the story tomorrow.
What gamble are you always willing to take?
Life is filled with risks.
Should I buy this present?
Should I give this panhandler money?
Should I invest in this mutual fund?
Should I buy this house?
Should I choose this school?
Should I leave this job?
Should I ask her out?
Should I say “yes”?!?
What gamble are you always willing to take?
