Lessons From The Top pt 2

Posted on Friday, October 3, 2014 in Uncategorized

music-869106-mI spent hours this week listening to and reading the lyrics of the current Billboard Hot 100. Musicians are often viewed as spokespersons of their generation.

For the cynics among us, it’s not all bad news.

At TreeHouse every week we remind our teens that “you’re not alone” because so many people – young and old – feel like they are the only one dealing with those feelings and thoughts. So it’s good news that two of the most popular songs have self-affirming messages.

Lessons From The Top

Posted on Thursday, October 2, 2014 in Uncategorized

true-falseI spent hours today listening to and reading the lyrics of the current Billboard Hot 100. Every generation has it’s spokespersons. Musicians are often viewed as spokespersons of their generation. I was looking for insight and wisdom.

What I found were some very common themes.

Today I’ll share these.

Lessons From The Top

Life has no meaning.
Life is short; play and party hard.

Don’t waste time searching for meaning. Life is random and painful; get high or suffer through it.

Payback and revenge make wrongs right.
I can find meaning through fun, fame, cars, jewelry, etc.

Pray for Punka

Posted on Wednesday, April 9, 2014 in Uncategorized

ShannonMysilentscream is here for you most days. Today #mysilentscream is for YOU to help me.

Today my daughter leaves for the Philippines. By the time many of you read this Shannon will be half a planet away.  I’m blessed, thrilled and a little jealous of her. I’m also Shannon’s (“Punka’s”) anxious, unsettled, and already-lonely-for-her dad.

If you’re a praying person please pray for Shannon, her colleagues and her parents who were both just teary-eyed in the living room.

I’ll let Shannon explain more via her website.

Hello my name is Shannon Volltrauer.

What Does The Lord Your God Require Of You?

Posted on Saturday, July 21, 2012 in Uncategorized

I’m thinking through what this means for me today, tomorrow, and my tomorrows.

What does the Lord your God require of you?
He requires only that you
fear the Lord your God,
and live in a way that pleases him,
and love him
and serve him with all your heart and soul.
– Deuteronomy 10:12, NLT

Empty Promises by Pete Wilson

Posted on Saturday, June 9, 2012 in Uncategorized

Author Pete Wilson has written Empty Promises because he believes that in subtle, and not-so-subtle, ways we practice idolatry.

Wilson explains that “every single human being has an unbelievable capacity for self-deception. It’s no wonder we fall for these empty promises over and over and over.”

“I believe one of the reasons God so adamantly speaks out against idolatry throughout the Bible is that we simply can’t worship something other than God and still live out our God-given purpose. What is that purpose? …Our purpose, in other words, is to reflect the God who made us.”

We Need Accountability

Posted on Thursday, May 24, 2012 in Uncategorized

I’ve met many people who forget that, “God made everything with a place and purpose.” 1  It’s when we think we’re better than other people that our ignorance is most obvious.

In a small rural village in Central America I realized that all of my education, books, tools, and toys were far less important than time spent in a relaxing, thoughtful conversation with loved ones.  There in a dusty impoverished village of a couple hundred people I was taught through word and deed that while education, books, tools, and toys have value, relationships — and specifically people — are most valuable.

Man Alive by Patrick Morley

Posted on Wednesday, April 18, 2012 in Uncategorized

I’ve read and valued Patrick Morley’s book Man In The Mirror.  I found it relevant, poignant and inspirational.  I had not read anything by Patrick Morley in years, but I was anticipating more of the same.

I was not disappointed.

Morley has a great reputation, and based on my experiences he certainly knows what he’s talking about.

Whether I would choose to refer to his “7 Primal Needs” as primal not I did agree with him that they were of import.

Man Alive: Transforming Your 7 Primal Needs into a Powerful Spiritual Life is based on his decades of discipling and mentoring men.

What’s it take?

Posted on Monday, November 28, 2011 in Uncategorized

It’s been three weeks since I “got a cold”. It’s a mighty cold. Relentlessly my cold has beaten off all attempts to find a remedy.

Despite such evident opposition I’ve had a great week. Food, family, friends and frivolity were plentiful.

As I recover from my week of self-discipline this week I’m diving into my journey to define values and how our values affect our lives.

As I begin, let me ask you a question:  What’s it take for you to have a great week?

Lovable, Capable & Worthwhile Wins!

Posted on Wednesday, July 27, 2011 in Uncategorized

When blinded by distortions of reality people flounder in pain.

Lost in loneliness.  Trapped in trauma.

U2’s Get On Your Boots hits on one such distortions:

You don’t know how beautiful
You don’t know how beautiful you are
You don’t know, and you don’t get it, do you?
You don’t know how beautiful you are

Each week at every TreeHouse we remind one another that we are all “lovable, capable and worthwhile.”  It’s a critical concept. When we understand, embrace and apply the truth that we are all “lovable, capable and worthwhile” it overrides the lies of not good enough.
