Weird Stuff – Sex, Porn & God

Posted on Monday, March 28, 2011 in Uncategorized

I’ve worked several jobs in my life.  Twice I’ve had jobs at motels.

When I was in my early twenties I worked the graveyard shift [11pm-7am] as a desk clerk at a hotel in suburban Chicago.

Back in the day, it was known as “a no-tell motel”; the kind of seedy place people took late night dates for an hour, or so, of privacy.

I won’t tell you which motel I worked at.  Today it’s known as “the ultimate in comfort and good taste”.  There is no reason to dispute that based on my experiences from two decades ago, but it’s safe to say that when I worked there the rooms were not chosen for their “comfort and good taste.”

Late at night the office lobby was closed.   After eleven o’clock when guests arrived we directed them to a side window.  There I stood behind inch-thick glass.  After greeting them through a slot etched below the window I took their money and passed their room key through the slot.

Weekend nights were often busy late into the night, but on weekdays there were many nights I had lots of free time.

Yes, there many lonely, sleepy nights.

This gives me an excuse to tell one of my weirder stories.

I was a college student in those days.  I went to school full-time and I worked full-time.  I did not drink caffeine, so in order to stay awake through the long nights I had several strategies my favorite was to suck on ice cubes.

One night, when I was very, very tired I walked back to the ice machine to try to stay awake.   The hallway was dimly lit between the office and the back room.  As I was walking I suddenly had a sense of wind rushing by my face.  Fortunately, I woke up JUST IN TIME to catch myself an inch or two from the ground.  I had fallen asleep while walking!

Alone, late at night, I had several options.  I watched television.  I listened to music. Occasionally I napped.   And, as a newly committed God-follower I spent hours reading my Bible.

You might think it would be an ideal time for spiritual growth, and it was, but in the last couple of months before I quit my late-night responsibilities changed.  The late-night amenities for our customers expanded.  You would have thought that the coin-operated vibrating beds would have been enough, but they added late night porn which occasionally “had to be monitored to make sure it was working properly”.

Between my job responsibilities, my curiosity and my lusts it took quite a bit of self-control to choose wisely.

There, at the desk — in a seedy “no-tell motel”, surrounded by porn — I spent many hours getting to know God.

Good thing I usually chose wisely, I hadn’t read this yet: “You are in for trouble, if you try to hide your plans from the LORD! Or if you think what you do in the dark can’t be seen.” [Isaiah 29:15]
