Sex, Lies & the Truth – Pt 1 of 3 – Sex

Posted on Wednesday, February 16, 2011 in Uncategorized

We could have been created to reproduce asexually like bacteria. We could reproduce by conquering like viruses, or bud like hydra.  We could have reproduced through parthogenesis in which the female does not need a male to fertilize the egg.  We could have a biological reproductive procreation devoid of affection, joy, and arousal.  On the other hand, we would never have had the wonder and imagery of sensual poetry like this:

I am my lover’s, and he claims me as his own.
Come, my love, let us go out to the fields and spend the night among the wildflowers.

Let us get up early and go to the vineyards to see if the grapevines have budded,

if the blossoms have opened, and if the pomegranates have bloomed.
There I will give you my love.
There the mandrakes give off their fragrance, and the finest fruits are at our door,

new delights as well as old, which I have saved for you, my lover.

You might be surprised to know that’s in the Bible.

May your breasts be like grape clusters,
and the fragrance of your breath like apples.
May your kisses be as exciting as the best wine,
flowing gently over lips and teeth.

[Song of Songs 7:10-13, 8-9]

Since the creation of humanity we were designed to build intimate relationships.

Last night I had a great time talking, laughing and eating with my friends Murph and Steve.  We’ve been best friends for almost thirty years.  We know each other intimately, but there are limits.

Amy and I agree that we need to build relationships with other people. Friendships are important, but sex is exclusive–us, alone.  I love how the old Hebrew words were translated, “which I have saved for you, my lover.

Other Random Thoughts

How MANY times have I played Dave Matthews Band’s song Rapunzel in and around the house through the years?

I just read the lyrics for what seems the first time!

And, I believe it was our friend Becky Patton who first “turned us on” [pun-intended!] to the book “Sheet Music“.

At the risk of my embarrassed wife let me recommend that you grab a copy of the book “Sheet Music: Uncovering the Secrets of Sexual Intimacy in Marriage.” The Kindle edition is FREE for now!

In case you’re wondering how my innocent and now embarrassed wife might be responding to this you can read part 3 of this series entitled “The Truth”. She has the last word with the Legend of the Hippo Pillow.
