We’re examining the power of secrets this week. If you missed the first two, here they are: Hidden Away and Our Hiding
Why Do We All Hide?
“There is one thing”, explains Stephen Covey, “that is common to every individual, relationship, team, family, organization, nation, economy and civilization throughout the world — one thing which, if removed, will destroy the most powerful government, the most successful business, the most thriving economy, the most influential leadership, the greatest friendship, the strongest character, the deepest love.”
Covey continues, “On the other hand, if developed and leveraged, that one thing has the potential to create unparalleled success and prosperity in every dimension of life. That one thing is trust.” 1
There are many myths about trust, Covey assesses them here:
In a high-trust relationship, we can say the mumble, stammer, and even say the wrong thing and people will still understand us.
In a low-trust relationship, we can be very clear and careful, and they’ll still misinterpret and misunderstand us.
Trust is a treasure not to be taken lightly.
As Covey explains, relationships of all kinds are built on and sustained by trust. They can also be broken down and destroyed by a lack of trust.
When do you trust?
Who do you trust?
And, assess yourself.
Are you trusted?
Are you trustworthy?
If we can’t trust ourselves, we’ll have a hard time trusting others.
