Secrets Hidden Away

SecretsSecrets, we all have them.
Secrets, we all guard them.
Secrets, we all fear their exposure.

This sweet song by Josh Groban describes one person’s challenge to help another feel safe enough to share those secrets.

Josh GrobanHidden Away

“Over mountains and sky blue seas
On great circles will you watch for me?
The sweetest feeling I’ve got inside
I just can’t wait to get lost in your eyes
And all these words that you meant to say
Held in silence day after day
Words of kindness that our poor hearts crave
Please don’t keep them hidden away

Chorus:
Sing it out so I can finally breathe in,
I can take in all you say
Holding out for something i believe in
All I really need today
I want to free your heart
I want to see your heart
Please don’t keep your heart hidden away

You’re a wonder, how bright you shine
A flickering candle in a short lifetime
A secret dreamer that never shows
If no one sees you then nobody knows
And all these words you were meant to say
Held in silence day after day
Words of kindness that our poor hearts crave
Please don’t keep them hidden away

Repeat Chorus

I want to free your heart
I want to see your heart
Please don’t keep your heart hidden away”

Read that again: “I want to free your heart. I want to see your heart. Please don’t keep your heart hidden away.”

He wants “to see your heart”, why?

Read the first lines again:

“The sweetest feeling I’ve got inside”
I wonder: What is that feeling?

“I just can’t wait to get lost in your eyes”
Is the feeling impatience? Or, selfishness?

“And all these words that you meant to say”
He wants something.

“Held in silence day after day”
–  He wants her to speak up. No more unspoken words.

“Words of kindness that our poor hearts crave”
He wants her kind words. He craves them.

“Please don’t keep them hidden away”
Does he want “to see your heart” because it brings him satisfaction?

I know I could just be reading my own selfish motives into this song, but:
– Maybe we need to examine our own hearts
– Maybe we need to be more honest
– Maybe we need to expose our motives
– And, maybe when we expose our own secrets, others would do so too

We’re all afraid. We all fear rejection.

Maybe the people in my life I wish would share their secrets with me would do so if they were more certain that I want to know them, really know them, for who they are, not for who I want them to be for me.

AND, maybe the people in your life you wish would share their secrets with you would do so if they were more certain that you want to know them, really know them, for who they are, not for who you want them to be for YOU.

Secrets. We all have them.
What will you do with yours?

BTW: It’s no secret, but if you want to see Josh Groban LIVE and in person, he’s coming to the Twin Cities: Thursday, May 2, 2012 click here for details.
