bloody-hand-printMost mornings my brain is awash in busy-thoughts. Today it’s calm.
In my brain played “Nothing But The Blood” by Robert Lowry.

I love this song because it reminds me of the freedom God’s forgiveness brings me.

What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus:

Despite my sins (spiritual and moral shortcomings) God’s grace offers a clean re-start.

What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

I know my sins damage my sense of self.

Oh! precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow;

I used to deny my sins believing that I could do as I pleased.

For my pardon, this I see,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
For my cleansing this my plea,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

God’s kindness leads invites us to return to ask for and receive a re-start.

Don’t you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you? Can’t you see that his kindness is intended to turn you from your sin?” 1

…Better think this one through from the beginning. God is kind, but he’s not soft. In kindness he takes us firmly by the hand and leads us into a radical life-change.” 2

Why does “sin” matter? Because I matter, you matter, my decisions matter, your decisions matter and God’s place as Creator and law-giver matters.

Sin breaks God’s laws; my sins and yours. Don’t fret. Don’t panic. Jesus Christ “…already made atonement, reconciling us with God once and forever when He offered Himself as a sacrifice.” 3

Jesus’ sacrificial death is a historical fact, but it’s also a daily truth. God invites us to accept and receive the hope and peace that God’s sacrificial forgiveness brings into our lives and relationship with God.

This is all my hope and peace…God’s forgiveness becomes tangible.
This is all my righteousness…Our past does not have to determine our future

Now by this I’ll overcome…Though we’ve chosen poorly God strengthens us
Now by this I’ll reach my home…God provides the means to eternity with God
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Note: I can only imagine how thrilled Robert Lowry would be that a song he wrote would still be sung and admired 137 years after he published it.
