Peace Amid Pain

Posted on Thursday, September 29, 2011 in Uncategorized

Pain and wounds drive us to want relief.  Like many people in constant pain the songwriter cries out, “Have compassion on me, Lord, for I am weak. Heal me, Lord, for my bones are in agony…Remember, O Lord, your compassion and unfailing love, which you have shown from long ages past.” 1

Why would anyone think that God could be talked to that way?  Because God has been willing to take the blame.  God hasn’t ducked responsibility for letting bad things happen, and God exposes God’s big heart.  “Though he brings grief, he also shows compassion because of the greatness of his unfailing love…The Lord is good to everyone. He showers compassion on all his creation.” 2

It’s that compassion that led Jesus to stay on the cross.  The same man who transformed dead people to life had the supernatural capacity to make the living dead.  The capacity, but not the character.  Jesus, like us, could have sinned, but he chose not to. “Jesus understands every weakness of ours, because he was tempted in every way that we are. But he did not sin!

“Perfect people” tend to put us off and repel us.  Jesus wants just the opposite.  ‘Whenever we are in need, we should come bravely before the throne of our merciful God. There we will be treated with undeserved kindness, and we will find help.” 3

Sara Groves – You Did That For Me

I don’t have to cry anymore
I don’t have to worry about what’s in store
I’ve walked that road exhausted and poor
I don’t have to cry anymore
And I don’t have to know it all
I don’t have to be so proud and stand so tall
I climbed that mountain only to fall
I don’t have to know it all
You did that for me
Oh, you did that for me
You wore the chains so I could be free
Yeah, yeah
You did that for me
And I don’t have to be ashamed
Hang my head or shoulder the blame
Wondering if my life’s been in vain
I don’t have to be ashamed
Oh, you did that for me
Oh, you did that for me
You wore the chains so I could be free
Yeah, yeah
You did that for me
Man of sorrows
Well acquainted with grief
Drug down to the city dump
Spread eagle on a cross beam
Propped up like a scarecrow
Nailed like a thief
There for all the world to see
You wore the chains so I could be free

Yeah, yeah
Oh Lord, you did that for me
Oh Lord, you did that for me
You wore the chains so I could be free
