Paint By Numbers

Posted on Monday, July 14, 2014 in Uncategorized

22UntitledThere I sat at the gray laminate kitchen table. It’s the only color I could envision looking good atop that table.

That was not good news.

I sat there perplexed with my Paint-by-Number painting in-complete, well actually it was un-started.

I didn’t know where to begin. This was not my work of art, it was someone else’s. I was just trying to mimic her work.

When you paint by numbers you try to create someone else’s pretty picture. Hopefully it looks good. It might even fool some people that the painting was created by a real artist.

Someone might fool them; I couldn’t.

On the other hand, most people want to prefer knowing the truth.

Most people want to prefer the truth. They might not like the truth, they may not prefer to tell the truth or hear the truth but when faced with reality they are glad to have access to the truth.

What’s The Point?

The ancient song writer sang:

The LORD is gracious and compassionate,
slow to anger and great in faithful love.

The LORD is good to everyone;
His compassion rests on all He has made. 1

It’s true, BUT there is more to the story.

Unike the pretty paint-by-numbers picture, the Bible does not always paint a pretty picture of God.

Reading the book of Numbers reveals anything but a simple, paint by numbers, predictable deity.

Reading the book of Numbers it’s not a pretty picture, but it’s true.

More tomorrow in By The Numbers.

1 – Psalm 145:8–9
