“Love you gorgeous, I’ll be in there in ten minutes.”
It’s 2:00 A.M. I just said that as Amy woke from her late night nap and staggered off to bed. I’ve said similar things hundreds of times.
Schedules: Since we were married 27 years ago today I have gone to sleep second 98% of the time. Often times I am last to sleep and first one awake. We have almost always had different schedules.
Sunrises: When I was younger and seldom slept more than a couple hours I would say, “Love you gorgeous, I’ll be in there in ten minutes” only to resume reading and forget about my intentions. I’d stagger into bed just as the sun was rising.
Zombies: Amy would lie in bed hoping to coax herself awake or willing herself out of bed only to be annoyed that I could hear one beep of my alarm leap into a standing position and walk my way into my day. “You were snoring one second ago and now your standing walking out of the room. I don’t understand how you do that.”
It’s our wedding anniversary, so in case Amy reads this today I don’t want to spoil the moment by detailing all the ways that I’ve defined and redefined “How to be a jerk to a wife you ‘love’.” Suffice to say, I’ve been both creative and relentless far more than I intended and far more than Amy deserved.
That said, we’ve learned some important ways to stay married (mostly) happily ever after from an ancient book that changed our lives.
Even if you don’t care about the Bible, these strategies and principles are blessed and life-transforming.
Hope for (Mostly) Happily Ever After
Let’s start with Jerk-Proofing Level 1
Always be gentle with others… 1
Take it to Jerk-Proofing Level-2
Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love. Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace. 2
Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. 3
Stress doesn’t have to take you two down; Jerk-Proofing Level 3
Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. 4
When you mess up, and you will, don’t run from God, run toward God; Jerk-Proofing Level 4
The Lord is kind and does what is right; our God is merciful.
The Lord watches over the foolish;
when I was helpless, he saved me.
I said to myself, “Relax, because the Lord takes care of you.” 5
#mysilentscream(s): It’ll be hard. It will hurt. It will have to involve God. It will be worth it!
Anna, thanks for the great picture! Shannon & Josh may you experience this joy too!
