Mercy! Count the Cost!

Posted on Friday, September 7, 2012 in Uncategorized

This week I’m responding to Ken Davis’ call to be “fully alive.” Fully alive people are characterized by many things including meaningful friendships, courageously overcoming fear, and a determination to course corrections when they fail.

We all fail.  Failure is painful.

Pain is part of the price of living.
– Love is painful.
– Relationships are painful.
– Failing is painful.

If we choose to move forward in our quest to live fully alive, we will fall, it will hurt . . . and it will be worth it.

Be prepared to pay the price. Change costs.  Progress can be painful.

Drop any idea that it will be a perfect journey. Perfectionism, fear, and impatience are all rooted in pride.

It’s time to swallow our pride.
I will fail.  You will fall.
There will be pain.
But the goal is worth the cost.

As Ken Davis wrote, “The only people who don’t fail and don’t feel pain are people lying in an open box at the front of a church.” 1

A week ago the Dave Matthews Band released the song Mercy.  It’s a fitting call to count the cost and pay up. Love is painful. Relationships are painful. Failing is painful. As a society we’ve failed enough.

Pray for change.
Hope for change.
Work for change.

Mercy

Don’t give up
I know you can see
All the world and the mess that were making
Can’t give up
And hope God will intercede
Come on back
Imagine that we could get it together
Stand up for what we need to be
Cause crime won’t save our feet or hungry child
Can’t lay down and hope no miracles change things
So lift up your eyes
Lift up your heart

Singing mercy will we overcome this
Oh one by one could we turn it around
Maybe carry on just a little bit longer
And I try to give you what you need

Me and you and you and you
Just want to be free yeah
But you see all the world is just as we’ve made it
And until we got a new world
Got to say that love is not a whisper or a weakness
No love is strong
So we got to get together yeah
Gotta get gotta get gotta get
Til there is no reason
To fight

Mercy will we overcome this
Oh one by one could we turn it around
Maybe carry on just a little bit longer
And I try to give you what you need

Yeah…Ah…Oh…Yeah…

Mercy will we overcome this
Oh we come to far to turn it around
Oh and asked too much to be a little bit stronger
But I want to give you what you need

Mercy what will become of us
Oh one by one could we turn it around
Maybe carry on just a little bit longer
And I try to give you what you need

God will answer our prayers.
God is also willing to be incredibly patient until we are sick and tired of the dysfunction and willing to make changes. “The time for change is now!” is mysilentscream!
