Kindness Heals

Posted on Tuesday, July 23, 2013 in Uncategorized

Peanut_Butter_TextureWhen I was a child I began my love for peanut butter sandwiches.

I at a LOT of peanut butter sandwiches.

Since we didn’t have enough fruit preserves to keep up with my voracious peanut butter sandwich consumption rate, I looked for alternatives.

Peanut Butter and maple syrup was too wet.
Peanut Butter and butter was not sweet enough.
Peanut Butter and apple sauce was yummy.
Peanut Butter and honey was my favorite.

I ate hundreds and hundreds of peanut butter and honey sandwiches. The peanut butter was tasty and nutritious and the light honey coating was just sweet enough to add to the deliciousness.

Kind words, like honey sweeten lives.

An ancient proverbs explains that, “Kind words are like honey sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.” 1

Collecting honey from honey bee hives can be a dangerous.
Good quality honey can be expensive.
Kindness has a price too.

My question for me, and my question for each of you: Will we pay the price for kindness?

Kindness is costly, but it’s a cost I want to pay.

In my life, kindness requires patience: Before answering questions pause and think for a moment, “what would I have done if I were in her or his situation?”

In my life, kindness requires perspective: Before responding in a conversation, ask yourself, “how would I feel if I were in her or his situation?”

In my life, kindness restrains power: Before you do something ask, “Is this kind? Would I want someone to do this to me?”

In my life, kindness requires prayer: Most of us are self-centered. Pray, “Please God help me to act kindly now.”

The cost of being unkind – and hypocrisy – is why so many choose not to trust in a God whose followers are unkind.

Join me. Intentionally be kind to others beyond your normal intention.

How did you feel about your efforts?
