Joy Despite Troubles

Posted on Friday, September 30, 2011 in Uncategorized

Tomorrow night my wife Amy and I will be attending Sara Groves’ CD release concert. As I wrote yesterday I have been a fan since my friend Dan Adler first played us her song Generations.

I am excited to hear her in person, and I’m also anticipating her new album.

Sara’s last album — Fireflies & Songs — was widely acclaimed, and even won as 2009 album of the year.  Commendably the reviewer added, “Already known for her transparent songwriting, Sara Groves gets even more piercingly honest on this, her ninth album. Whether her relationship with God, marital tension, or a private battle with anxiety, it’s poetically spilled forth…” 1

I chose to highlight the song “Joy Is In Our Hearts” from Fireflies & Songs as the final selection in this series of Sara Groves songs.

Sara is an avid supporter of social justice causes including the International Justice Mission and Food For The Hungry.  Justice and compassion for the under-fed are lifelong passions of mine too.  When there is injustice in our world, and hungry people in need, there is “good reason we carried heavy hearts.”  Yet, when we pool our resources and add our names to the roll of doers we “come together in our friendship to remember”.

I believe with certainty that no one should be as generous and selfless as those who trust their lives to Jesus Christ.  When we believe in an eternity with Jesus we do not focus all our hopes and joys in our life and comforts because we know that there will be more to come in the here-after.  “For good reason this joy is in our hearts. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Christ our joy and strength.”

Sara Groves – Joy Is In Our Hearts

We were pressed on every side
Full of fear and troubled thoughts
For good reason we carried heavy hearts

It is good to come together
In our friendship to remember
All the reasons hope is in our hearts

Hallelujah hallelujah
Christ our joy and strength
Hallelujah hallelujah
Christ our joy and strength

Now with patience in our suffering
Perseverance in our prayers
With good reason this hope is in our hearts

Hallelujah hallelujah
Christ our joy and strength
Hallelujah hallelujah
Christ our joy and strength

Oh we saw the face of Angels
Many good things well secured
For good reason this joy is in our hearts

Hallelujah hallelujah
Christ our joy and strength
Hallelujah hallelujah
Christ our joy and strength

Hallelujah hallelujah
Christ our joy and strength
Hallelujah hallelujah
Christ our joy and strength

For good reason joy is in our hearts

If you missed them I highlighted several Sara Groves songs.  You can find them here:

  1. Scott, powerful words. Thoughts for hope have been on my mind for many friends. I’ll share these words. As my son Jeff says “hope is my favorite thing to have.”

  2. Thanks for reading and replying Mike!
Your son’s wisdom-filled, what a great legacy to pass on.
Almost every week I remind someone that James 1:5 tells us to ask God for wisdom because God won’t embarrass us for asking.
How else can you explain — “Common sense is not common to you” — the transformation I’m experiencing. =D
