Holiday Rest Intentions
I’m not very good at relaxing.
Like many of you I had some time off of work for the Thanksgiving weekend. Unfortunately, even while I was “relaxing” I was not particularly restful.
– I read for work.
– I studied health and nutrition.
– Felt frustrated with the Chicago Bears.
– I followed my fantasy football players.
I was not particularly “rest-full.”
Is Rest Possible?
I know I’m not “good” at resting, but I know that it’s possible.
E.M. Bounds, one of the deepest writers I’ve read wrote, “Martin Luther, when once asked what his plans, for the following day were, answered: ‘Work, work, from early until late. In fact, I have so much to do that I shall spend the first three hours in prayer.’ ” 1
Jesus said to his friends and followers the same thing he says to us, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.” 2
In my prayer-time this weekend God reminded me that all my “busy-ness” was my own doing. God wants my attention and my willingness to settle-down into God’s schedule.
May we all choose to receive God’s rest.
