Halloween Harangue

Posted on Tuesday, November 1, 2011 in Uncategorized

Curiously I googled “I hate Halloween”.  About 255,000 results.

There is a Facebook page “I Hate Halloween” and “3,701 like this”.

I have met many people who love Halloween, and people who hate Halloween.

One blogger ranted, “It’s not even a holiday, it’s a faux holiday. A Fauxliday.  It’s nothing more than a chance for Wal-Mart and Target to sell more cheap Chinese-made crap that no one needs, and a chance for Big Sugar to rake in big profits on cheap sweets none of us need. As usual, some Christians have responded in a predictably hilarious fashion, while others see it as a chance to engage in a little advertising for Jesus.”

It’s funny how people can be so outspoken and vitriolic about such things.

I’ve read stories about rituals that occur in and around October 31st.  I don’t know if they are true, what is true or if they are urban legends.

What I do know is that every year many children and adults come to my front door filled with hope.

They come hoping for some candy.  What they get is a smile, a sense of community, and a moment to realize that the world is a better place than it seems.  Many of the children, young and old, are not from my demographic.  Children and parents line up at my door, but never come inside.  I do not know them.  Most of them I have never seen before.

But, I love it!

I realize that Halloween, like Christmas and all other holidays are exploited by some, marketed by others and despised by some, but for the first time since I was a child I can say without hesitation I love Halloween this year!

For twenty dollars I gave away a hundred nutritious fruit snacks, affirmed kids on their costume choices, expressed gratitude for parents who guided their children around the neighborhood, handed out many smiles and we shared a moment of good will.

As I wrote to my friend Ben, “Uhm, walk around look hungry, carry a bag and say, “Trick or treat!?!” it’s the only day all year people give you free candy when you do that!!!”

I can’t wait for next year to hand out a hundred two second moments of bold love!  That’s mysilentscream.

  1. Thanks! This puts the perspective on occasions like Halloween that is hidden in the corporate complaining. My son got to spend Halloween with his best friend in the whole world for the last time last night because his friend had to move this morning and because of it happening on Halloween my son will never forget the last night he had with his best friend.

  2. Thanks for reading and commenting Tom.
I love little X’s tender heart, it’s just like his dad’s!
I hope his loss will not limit his passion to make new friends.
