Find A Mentor

Posted on Wednesday, November 28, 2012 in Emotional, How To, Relational, Social, Spiritual, Values

As I was approaching fifty years old I sought the wisdom of my elders. I sought out men and women older than I was to learn lessons on life that they had been learning.

Last Monday I began a series entitled A Treasure Chest Of Wisdom, including:

1. Don’t Hold Grudges
2. Take Care Of Your Health.
3. Compassion Makes Sense and Giving Is Better Than Taking
4. Greed Gains Momentum

5. Gratitude Leads To Contentment
6. Contentment Leads To Generosity
7. Everyone Splashes. Splash Blessings.

A Mentor

Find a mentor for life who will help you think through important life decisions.

One man I interviewed talked about the impact his mentor had on him:
My mentor radiated the presence of Christ to others.
My mentor had an enormous stature, but he had a humble presence.
My mentor was self-aware, but never prideful.

When he talked about his mentor, the look of “I am proud to know him, grateful for him and indebted to him”, radiated from his face.

Find A Mentor

In a previous post entitled Don’t Settle, Get Support, I quoted Friedrich Nietzsche: “Whoever does not have a good father should procure one.”

I would paraphrase Nietzsche, “Whoever doesn’t have a good mentor should find one.”

– Do you wish that you had a trustworthy father figure? Find one.
– Do you wish that you had an affirming father figure? Find one.
– Do you wish that you had a playful father figure? Find one.
– Do you wish that you had a wise father figure? Find one.

– Do you wish that you had a supportive mother figure? Find one.
– Do you wish that you had a nurturing mother figure? Find one.
– Do you wish that you had a wise mother figure? Find one.
– Do you wish that you had a winsome mother figure? Find one.

– Do you wish that you had a educational role model? Find one.
– Do you wish that you had a professional role model? Find one.

– Do you wish that you had a community-oriented role model? Find one.
– Do you wish that you had a spiritual role model? Find one. 1

Find Someone To Cheer You On & Lead You Forward

Someone wise enough to help you think through why act in the way that you do.

Someone brave enough to help you examine your beliefs about yourself that stop you from taking certain actions.

Someone with the vision to help you your options really are.

Someone strategic enough to help you to identify your best and how you can go about getting the right results for you.

Someone who can help you to maintain your motivation through the ups and downs of your life.

Someone who will help you to become those things for someone else.

More tomorrow.

1 – If I was looking for a spiritual mentor I would look in a good church. Honest.  Regardless what you’ve heard, there are many good people in good churches who are making a positive difference in the world.
