If I see a movie in a theater, I almost never pay full price. Last night was different. Last night was special. We saw the Day of the Doctor.
I started watching the BBC program Doctor Who during the 1970s. I sat with a couple of friends more than thirty years ago watching my first Doctor Who episodes.
Last night I sat with those same old friends watching another “old friend.”
The Doctor traveled in his TARDIS. He used his favorite tool the Sonic Screwdriver. He faced his adversaries the Daleks and their fearsome threat, “Ex-ter-min-ate.” And as the audience expected, The Doctor saved the day with morality, wisdom and cleverness.
I love Doctor Who because of his nobility and familiarity.
Jesus Christ mentors his companions.
Doctor Who mentors his companions.
Jesus Christ comforts the fearful.
Doctor Who comforts the fearful.
Jesus Christ addresses evil.
Doctor Who addresses evil.
Jesus Christ confronts evil-doers.
Doctor Who confronts evil-doers.
Jesus Christ sacrifices for strangers.
Doctor Who sacrifices for strangers.
I love Doctor Who because of the lessons we learn.
We learn about Miracles:
“The universe is big. It’s vast and complicated and ridiculous. And sometimes, very rarely, impossible things just happen and we call them miracles.” 1
We learn about the Problem of Evil:
“The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t always spoil the good things and make them unimportant.” 2
We learn about the dignity of each human life:
“In 900 years of time and space, I’ve never met anyone who wasn’t important.” 3
We learn that we’re all capable of becoming positive difference-makers:
“We’re all stories, in the end. Just make it a good one, eh?” 4
Speaking of stories, if I only had one chance to introduce you to Doctor Who I would show you “Blink.” Check out the trailer here.
