Contentment Leads To Generosity

Posted on Monday, November 26, 2012 in Emotional, Financial, How To, Relational, Social, Spiritual, TreeHouse, Values

As I was approaching fifty years old I sought the wisdom of my elders. I sought out men and women older than I was to learn lessons on life that they had been learning.

Monday I began a series entitled A Treasure Chest Of Wisdom, including:

1. Don’t Hold Grudges
2. Take Care Of Your Health.
3. Compassion Makes Sense and Giving Is Better Than Taking
4. Greed Gains Momentum

5. Gratitude Leads To Contentment

Contentment Leads To Generosity

Note: This post in NOT intended to brag or boast.

As Thanksgiving ended and Black Friday began rather than feed our greed we gave our wealth.

Few people in North America would call us wealthy, but because we have jobs and we maintain a budget we have the opportunity to give generously to accomplish one of our goals to “make the world a better place.”

We believe the Bible when it says, “The one who blesses others is abundantly blessed;
those who help others are helped.

Our monthly budget allows both our monthly designated giving to church and charities, including TreeHouse (see below).

Our monthly budget also has an undesignated giving fund that could be used throughout the year.

Each Thanksgiving week if there is money left we express our gratitude to God by giving the money away.

This year we:
Helped dig a clean drinking water well through Samaritan’s Purse
Helped orphans in Haiti through Giving Hope Rescue Mission
Helped AIDS orphans and widows through a fund provided by World Vision

Samaritan’s Purse also helped us reduce the impact of poverty by providing shoes & clothing to the poor.

Kiva helped us reduce the impact of poverty by providing a microloan
– Salomón a coffee grower from Mexico can buy coffee plants & organic fertilizer
– Dioscora a Philippine woman can buy sodas, snack foods, and toiletries, for her store

World Relief helped us reduce the impact of human trafficking overseas
Source MN helped us reduce the impact of human trafficking in Minnesota.

Through Voice of Martyrs we gave money to a family whose loved one was martyred.

Through Christian Aid we bought baby goats and chicks for Vietnamese lepers who will feel more dignity and self-respect as they make a living and provide a service in their community.

Give Out Of Gratitude

We gave to the Lynn Sage Cancer Research Foundation because of our gratitude that someone had done the research that had saved my mom’s life, and we hope future research will save others.

We gave to the Matthew 25: Ministries because they care for a needy world with the things we throw away.

We gave to Urban Homeworks because they helped our friend Heather to own her home.
