Contentment Despite Circumstances

Pain Despite Faith

My friend Brandon, like many people, lives with the pain of migraines.  Brandon has explained, “migraines make me very ill.   They can put me out of action for an entire day or more.  I can feel one coming on and then when full blown I feel horrible, nauseous and need to go to bed. While some people can have a migraine every couple of months or a couple of migraines a week, sometimes my migraines can repeat day after day for a week or more.”

Last night I met with Brandon and his soon to be bride Susie.  I admire that — despite Brandon’s migraines — he’s found the fortitude to persevere, pursue Susie, fall in love and plan a wonderful future together.

That kind of vision for the future requires faith.  Faith to see beyond our circumstances.

Jesus Christ demonstrated faith to see beyond our circumstances.

You and I can follow Jesus’ and Brandon’s example.

Faith Despite Circumstances

Jesus Christ was hunted by the religious elite, the politically powerful and betrayed by a close friend.  Through it all he was compassionate.  “Moved with compassion, Jesus reached out and touched him. “I am willing,” he said. ‘Be healed!'”.  Jesus challenged his listeners, “You must be compassionate, just as your Father is compassionate.”  1

Some of you have wounds and pain-filled circumstances.  People pray and pray for God’s help, but you who don’t get well.  As Steve Wiens said today, “Defeaning silence seems to result from humble prayer for some.”  It’s not “fair”, and while I wish I could, I cannot, and neither can you make it “fair”.

Faith Delivers Contentment

Last week in Secrets For Happy Friendships I mentioned how important it is to, “Be happy for others in their good fortune.” Contentment Despite circumstances requires a unique faith-filled, hopeful perspective that will let others have happiness despite our own pain.

Sara Groves’ album Conversation has a beautiful, poetic and song which describes her faith despite her own hurtful circumstances.  “I can’t remember a trial or a pain he did not recycle to bring me gain.”  I can.  I can remember some inexplicably frustrating parts of life that do not have any apparent “gain.”

Sara Groves – He’s Always Been Faithful

Morning by morning I wake up to find
the power and comfort of God’s hand in mine.
Season by season I watch him amazed,
in awe of the mystery of his perfect ways.

Chorus:
All I have need of his hand will provide.
He’s always been faithful to me.

I can’t remember a trial or a pain
he did not recycle to bring me gain.
I can’t remember one single regret
in serving God only and trusting his hand.

Chorus:
This is my anthem,
this is my song,
the theme of the stories I’ve heard for so long.

God has been faithful,
he will be again.
His loving compassion, it knows no end.

Chorus

1 – Mark 1:41; Luke 6:36 [NLT]

  1. Hey, I know that guy… heheheeeeee. I really enjoy that Sara Groves Album too.

  2. You do know him!
And he — like the rest of us — is glad to know you.

  3. Why do I feel as if I was Job at times? Trudging through life was always my norm. The struggle makes you stronger because of it. I never asked why I was dealt the hand I was. I accepted it and continued. Even if the struggle was front and center in my life.

As Don Henley said “Get Over It”. You can’t take the drop of water out of the lake after you dripped it in, so use what you have.

  4. I was taught “Don’t Waste Your Sorrows”.
    I try no to.
Thank you for sharing your insights and experiences Travis!
