Dreams Wait To Become Reality

Posted on Friday, January 20, 2012 in How To, Social, Spiritual, Values

Texas Gov. Rick Perry dropped out of the race for the Republican presidential nomination yesterday. His dreams to become the next president, done. 1

Most of us do not have such exclusive finite dreams; only one in 312 million people can become president. 2

Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul, Mitt Romney, and Rick Santorum remain to oppose President Obama in the 2012 Presidential election.  They dream on.

Dreams Deferred

Ezekiel, like us, lived in a troubled times. A war had divided his country, politics were a mess, economic hardship, and religious confusion.

3 Practices To Make Dreams Reality

Posted on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 in How To, Social, Spiritual, Values

Dreamers Dream

Forty-eight years ago Martin Luther King, Jr welcomed the crowd assembled at the Lincoln Memorial, in Washington D.C. 1

He began, “I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation.” 2

Unless I’m mistaken, he was right.

Dreamers Deliver

“I Have a Dream” is a 17-minute speech in which Martin Luther King, Jr. called for racial equality and an end to racial discrimination. The speech became the defining moment of the American Civil Rights Movement.

Jail Term Shame Didn’t Defeat The New Miss America

23-year-old Laura Kaeppeler – Miss Wisconsin – was crowned the 2012 Miss America. As a daughter of a convicted felon Laura had many challenges in her personal life.

When she was eighteen years old and graduating from high school her father started an 18-month jail sentence in federal prison for mail fraud.

Don’t Put Limits On Your Dreams

“If you limit your choices only to what seems possible or reasonable, you disconnect yourself from what you truly want, and all that is left is compromise.” Robert Fritz

Sarah Young’s Jesus Calling Devotional Bible

Posted on Saturday, January 14, 2012 in Reviews, Spiritual

People I trust and admire read and discuss Sarah Young’s Jesus Calling devotional. Their faiths have been strengthened and their lives transformed.

I was excited to review the Jesus Calling Devotional Bible even though it was published using The Holy Bible, New King James Version a translation I seldom have used.

There is a topical index listing more than forty topics most readers of the Jesus Calling Devotional Bible would have chosen.

Following the Topical Index is the “When Your Heart Longs for Help” index.

Broomball & Buddies

Posted on Thursday, January 12, 2012 in Emotional, Relational, Social, Spiritual, Sports, TreeHouse, Values

Broomball has always been an equalizer sport. Unless you play on a club level or a national level like my friend Paul Thyren, most of us play broomball for fun.

Fun racing around on slippery hockey rink with street shoes or boots wielding awkward brooms; then in a moment of hope you swing the broom hoping to connect with the ball and send it into the opposition’s goal.

Broomball Buddies

Broomball is a great sport to enjoy wintery fun with friends. Here from the winter of 1996 is my dear friend the late Adam Bieringer. Adam passed away in April of 2010 much too young.

Broomball & Breakaways

Breakaways & Broken Spirits

A beautiful February day filled with sunshine, laughter and friends.  It was a TreeHouse staff retreat and we had the morning and afternoon off.  A group of us headed to a local hockey rink for some broomball.

Since many players enjoying scoring goals more than stopping them I volunteered to play goalie for our team.  I also knew that most if not all the players were more athletic and better broomball players that I was. I also assumed that the differences in our abilities would be less evident with me in goal.

Healing is a Choice by Stephen Arterburn

Posted on Sunday, January 8, 2012 in Emotional, How To, Intellectual, Reviews, Social, Spiritual

I’ve read a couple of Stephen Arterburn books. Since I believe that Healing is a Choice I chose to give tHealing is a Choice a read.

The author explores 10 choices that he believes we need to make if we are to experience genuine and lasting healing.

1. The Choice to Connect your life
Lie – All I need to heal is just God and me.

2. The Choice to Feel your life
Lie – Real Christians should have peace in all circumstances

3. The Choice to Investigate Your Life in Search of Truth
Lie – It does no good to look back or look inside

Leonard Sweet’s I Am a Follower: The Way, Truth, and Life of Following Jesus

Posted on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 in Reviews, Spiritual, Values

Thomas, one of Jesus Christ friends, asked him about eternity “How can we know the way?” Jesus replied, “I am the way, the truth, and the life! Without me, no one can go to the Father. If you had known me, you would have known the Father. But from now on, you do know him, and you have seen him.”

Sweet invites his readers to consider the implications and benefits of living our Story as Christ’s Story.

Sweet captured the gospel and it’s implications accurately: “To be the humans God made us to be, we need grace.” We need that grace to effectively represent Christ for a dying world.

New Year New Courage

Posted on Thursday, December 29, 2011 in Emotional, How To, Relational, Spiritual, Sports, Values

Synched together with rope I approached the rock.

I called out “On Belay?” I received the reply “Belay On”. I responded “Climbing”. Followed by “Climb On.”

My friend David Villringer learned to rock climb.  David’s courage and determination were both admirable and seemingly unreachable.  Graciously and patiently Dave taught me to climb.

David climbed the Tetons.  I struggled at Devil’s Rock.

I lacked both David’s strength and his will.

I wanted to climb, and I wanted to succeed, but I wanted NOT to get hurt far more.

New Year New Awareness

Posted on Wednesday, December 28, 2011 in Emotional, How To, Relational, Social, Spiritual, Values

I sat down in a coffee shop today.  A young professional to my left.  Another man to my right.  One sat with a beverage, a laptop and fine clothes.  The man to my right sat wearing shabby, unkempt clothes, with nothing in front of him.

Those of you who know me well probably laughed: a) that I noticed; and b) that someone dressed less “casually” than I did.

I thought I’d be nice.  After setting down my stuff, I said to the man on my right, “You don’t have a beverage, can I buy you one?”  He said, “No, thank you.”  I walked to the counter.  Five minutes later he left.
