Putdowns
“Excuse me, is that your nose or did a bus park on your face?”
Charlie Bales has an unusually large nose and is an easy target for Insults and putdowns. 1
Confronted by an adversary who calls him “Big Nose” Bales diminishes the power of the insult by creating twenty insults of his own, including:
Personal: Well, here we are, just the three of us.
Punctual: All right…your nose was on time but YOU were fifteen minutes late.
Humorous: Laugh & the world laughs with you. Sneeze, and it’s goodbye, Seattle!
Scientific: Say, does that thing there influence the tides?
Aromatic: It must wonderful to wake up in the morning and smell the coffee…in Brazil. 2
Jesus Showed Me The New Jerusalem by Jimmy Cooper
My friend Jimmy Cooper has one of those experiences that you want, and don’t want to have. I’ll let him explain. 1
On January 19th, 2012 - I was with my wife Christiane in our apartment in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. We had been out on a date and we had just gotten home. Actually, I guess we had been home for an hour or so and it was pretty late at night, about 1:30am. I started having an overwhelming feeling that I needed to lie down. It was out of the blue and I couldn’t fight it, so I lay down in bed and closed my eyes. I wasn’t feeling well and it came on so quickly, I just had to close my eyes.
Your Presence Is A Present To The World
Football players cleaning out their lockers feel it.
Presidential hopefuls reviewing the debates feel it.
American Idols wannabes and coulda-beens feel it.
What is “it”? Self- pity. Self-doubt. The curse of “if only.”
Don’t let self-pity take you down!
You are lovable even when your flaws are exposed.
You are capable even when you make mistakes.
You are worthwhile even when you’re struggling to believe it.
Somewhere there is someone that values you abilities.
Somewhere there is someone that sees your talents.
Somewhere there is someone that needs your skills.
Why Men Hate Going To Church by David Murrow
I’m a man. Of the clan “men.” I love going to church.
That said, Murrow’s title was compelling. Here’s what I learned.
Here are his chapter titles and my brief summaries:
PART 1: WHERE ARE THE MEN?
1. Perfectly Designed – The church needs a re-design to open doors to men.
2. Yes, There Really Is a Gender Gap – And, it’s increasing worldwide
3. Men: Who Needs ’Em? – We do they bring balance, energy and drive
4. Who Are the Missing Men? – They’re getting “results” somewhere.
5. The Masculinity Bank – A typical man won’t do something he believes is feminine.
6. The Two Jesuses – We’re taught God’s meekness we no longer fear his wrath.
Dreams CAN Come True
High school Dropout Becomes A Millionaire
He was born to a young unmarried woman he never knew.
He was given up for adoption.
He was without parents until he was adopted when he was six weeks old.
He was without a mom – at five years old his adopted mom died.
He was without a dad – when he dad traveled around looking for work.
He did have a grandmother who modeled and taught him important life lessons.
No one would have predicted that a teen, who grew up poor with a troubled childhood and a limited education, would build a worldwide corporation and become incredibly wealthy.
Jail Term Shame Didn’t Defeat The New Miss America
23-year-old Laura Kaeppeler – Miss Wisconsin – was crowned the 2012 Miss America. As a daughter of a convicted felon Laura had many challenges in her personal life.
When she was eighteen years old and graduating from high school her father started an 18-month jail sentence in federal prison for mail fraud.
Don’t Put Limits On Your Dreams
“If you limit your choices only to what seems possible or reasonable, you disconnect yourself from what you truly want, and all that is left is compromise.” Robert Fritz
Counting My Blessings
It’s the 13th; the 13th of the month.
It’s FRIDAY the 13th.
For some of you that conjures up images of Jason Voorhees, and others a superstitious fear of Friday the 13th.
My Friday the 13ths are neither a horror story, nor unlucky. Just the opposite!
Amy & I started going out on Friday the 13th.
We married on the 13th.
Amy’s birthday is on a 13th.
Today is the 313th 13th that Amy & I have been “going out.”
It’s been 1361 weeks.
It’s been 9527 days.
And, I’m still counting my blessings!
Broomball & Buddies
Broomball has always been an equalizer sport. Unless you play on a club level or a national level like my friend Paul Thyren, most of us play broomball for fun.
Fun racing around on slippery hockey rink with street shoes or boots wielding awkward brooms; then in a moment of hope you swing the broom hoping to connect with the ball and send it into the opposition’s goal.
Broomball Buddies
Broomball is a great sport to enjoy wintery fun with friends. Here from the winter of 1996 is my dear friend the late Adam Bieringer. Adam passed away in April of 2010 much too young.
Broomball & Breakaways
Breakaways & Broken Spirits
A beautiful February day filled with sunshine, laughter and friends. It was a TreeHouse staff retreat and we had the morning and afternoon off. A group of us headed to a local hockey rink for some broomball.
Since many players enjoying scoring goals more than stopping them I volunteered to play goalie for our team. I also knew that most if not all the players were more athletic and better broomball players that I was. I also assumed that the differences in our abilities would be less evident with me in goal.
Broomball & Blunders
On more than one occasion someone has suggested that I am competitive. The truth is they’re right, but it’s much deeper than that “I am competitive.”
Broomball
I learned to play broomball courtesy of Bethel U’s VP Ralph Gustafson. In 1987 Ralph was the youth pastor of Bethel Baptist Church of Green Bay, WI. I was Ralph’s “Youth Ministry Associate” or some such title. I worked long hours, got paid for a few and loved my boss and the teens so much I volunteered the rest of the time.
