Captivated by Hope

Posted on Tuesday, August 12, 2014 in Uncategorized

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI have a friend learning to overcome her addiction. She’s at Hazelden looking for hope and skills. Last month Robin Williams was doing the same thing.

Sadly, yesterday the news spread that he’d given up his search.

Without hope
…parents give up
…the tempted give in
…spouses give up
…students drop out
…employers lessen expectations
…lovers give in
…lonely people lower standards
…people give up.

Too often people
…feel all alone
…feel unheard
…feel disconnected
…feel hopeless

In my experience people feel hope-less far more often than they need to.

Sometimes it’s them
– they fear rejection
– they believe they will go unheard
– they know they can be annoying
– they don’t want to drag others down
– they hate themselves & assume others will too

Sometimes it’s us:
– we reject them, or steer them away
– we believe we’re too tired to listen
– we know burdens be burdensome & annoying
– without boundaries burdens so drag us down
we haven’t learned to listen
– we don’t live with compassion

Last night my co-worker Mandy Brandt said the wisest thing I’ve heard all year: “If you don’t think that you struggle with something, I have news for you: You struggle with self-awareness.”

That’s a call to compassion.

That’s a call to bring hope.

Perfect timing, the ancient writer continues, “Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying. When God’s people are in need, be ready to help them. Always be eager to practice hospitality.” 1

Here’s how I hear that:

Rejoice, there is hope (and it’s not all on you).
Be patient in trouble (because it is troublesome).
Keep on praying (because help is needed).
Help the needy (you’ll need help someday).
Be (unselfishly) eagerly hospitable.

#mysilentscream: Let’s honor our Creator and be captivated by love and hope.
