Captivate by Interdependence

Posted on Thursday, August 14, 2014 in Uncategorized

heartsmanyYesterday was our 326-month wedding anniversary.
It’s also just a start.

Asking someone out is a start.
Dating is a shared-journey.
A wedding is a transitional celebration.
A marriage is an interdependent challenge.

Interdependence

I’m naturally introverted.
Therefore, community doesn’t come naturally.
Romance wasn’t in my born-with skill sets.
Interdependence seemed like weakness.

On the other hand, I wanted a long and happy marriage.

Interdependent Marriage

So I pray and ask God for help to get along better with Amy – “God, thanks for Amy. Please help me to know how to love her her better.” And, despite my occasional doubts, I anticipate I’ll get an answer.
– Maybe I’ll read something in my Bible and wise advice will penetrate my mind
– Maybe a forwarded email from my dad shares humorously life-challenges
– Or, someone will give me a creative idea of how they express love
– A song will express what I was looking to express
– A Youtube video will give my feelings expression

Other times as I sit talking to God it crosses my mind – insert “duh” here – that doing the laundry voluntarily would be the loving thing to do.

The Bible also invites us to, “be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep.” Loving interdependently has cost me some of my independence and rewarded me with a wealth of deep and meaningful conversations.

Interdependent Living

I’ve found that I can when God “tells me” to do something I should.
– So I stop my car to cheer on a skateboarder
– I buy lemonade from young entrepreneurs
– I give money to a man on the street corner
– I ask a disheveled man (homeless?) for advice
– I chat with the gang leader walking through my neighborhood

Live in harmony with each other. Don’t be too proud to enjoy the company of ordinary people. And don’t think you know it all!” 2

We may not have live in a mansion, drive a new Camaro, wear the latest clothes or have all the answers, but living captivated by interdependence has helped me feel like a wealthy man.
