A Self-Esteem Civil War – Death Was Five Feet & One Second Away

Posted on Friday, March 4, 2011 in Uncategorized

Tuesday I had a near-death experience.

While driving home — surprise — death came calling.

Death Came Calling

I was sitting at the intersection talking to my friend Jesse waiting to turn at the light.  The green arrow lit up.

Time to go.

I started to turn left and stopped for no apparent reason.

My foot slowly rose off the gas pedal, for no apparent reason.

A southbound city bus traveling at a high speed went through a red light at 252 & 66th Ave N.

The driver missed us by five feet. No horn. No hesitation.

Five feet forward, one second faster and I would be DEAD.

Reality Set In

I was kinda shook up; for a couple of hours.

I could be dead, splattered, gone, in a box, surrounded by people today on a cold overcast day who wish they were somewhere, anywhere else.

I’m grateful to be alive, but I am very aware I could be dead.

It could have happened to anyone.

It could have happened to you!

You could be dead in one second with absolutely no warning.

I have been in life-threatening situations before.

In elementary school our brand new van — less than 24 hours old — was totaled by a truck.

When I was seventeen I fell through ice on the Des Plaines River to the armpits and had to somehow crawl out.

I nearly drown, two other times.

BUT, I have never been five feet and one second away from death before.

The Future

At 11:19 Tuesday I knew I was about to drop off Jesse.  Then I was going to drive home.  I was going to kiss my wife, chat and check my email.  I knew my future plan.  I was certain.

At 11:20 that could all have changed!

Do you know everything about your future?  Are you certain?  How do you know?

You might be torn between what you believe and what you have heard.  What you “know” and what you “feel” and what you’ve heard.  Your mind and heart may be at odds with matters of life and death.

You might be absolutely certain that you know all you need to know about your life and what would happen to you if you died.  If so, I respect you.  On the other hand, I don’t.  BUT I do know that I had peace faced with death.

On the other hand, I sat shook up thinking about the possibility that you, or any of my readers may not have the peace I had.

I know that I have made peace with God.  I know that if I died I would not need to be afraid.  I know that I have talked it over with God.  You might think it’s a myth or a delusion.  You might think that I’m ignorant or a fool, but I know faced with death I had peace.  If it happened again, I would have peace about what happened next.

I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love…nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.” [Romans 8:38-39]

Please consider those words of another follower of Jesus Christ, and even if you reject God, please say all your “I love yous”, “I’m sorrys” and “Thank yous” you or a loved one may be five feet and one second away from death.

If you feel yourself wanting to think or talk about this some more, email me or call me.  I’d love to listen to what you have to say.
